What is a Kidney Health Check?

Our kidneys play a key role in our bodies healthy function. We've got two they're that important, to ensure we have a backup if needs be.

It is recommended that if you have more than one of the known risk factors of kidney disease that you see your GP for a Kidney Health Check every two years.

If you have high blood pressure or diabetes it is recommended that you have a Kidney Health Check every year.

What is a Kidney Health Check?

The Kidney Health Check has three tests:

1.A Blood Test

To determine the level of waste products in your blood and calculate what’s called your estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).

2. A Urine Test

Checking for albumin (a type of protein) or blood in your urine.

3. A Blood Pressure Test

As kidney disease causes high blood pressure and high blood pressure causes kidney disease.

A renal ultrasound scan may be arranged by your GP if kidney disease is suspected. This scan will show the size of your kidneys, identify any issues with the structure of your kidney and urinary tract, and locate any kidney stones or tumours.

Following your test results and assessment of your situation, other tests or procedures may be required, or you may be referred to a kidney specialist (nephrologist).
