Movember kicks off at Hawthorne Clinic

You’ll be noticing a bit of grizzle on the faces of several Hawthorne Clinic staff through November - or, to give it its more appropriate name: Movember.

Yes, four of the clinic’s team are participating in this year's installment of the facial-hair-growing event that seeks to “change the face of men’s health”.

Caleb Pitt, out front as one of our reception team, is perhaps the person most of you will notice sporting a bit more fuzz through the coming weeks.

However, behind the front desk, two of our GPs - Dr Keith MacLaverty and Dr Yasu Takao - have also committed to the monthly mo.

Alongside them, our practice manager, Lucas Down (who already has a light beard), will grow out his designer stubble into a proper set of whiskers.

Hanging up their razors on November 1, it’s only early days for the four participants. Nonetheless, their 5 o’clock shadows are definitely lengthening.

It’s uncertain exactly what the results will be in a month’s time. Both Yasu and Caleb say they might struggle to grow much, but they’re still keen to join the team effort.

The reason the clinic is participating is to raise both awareness and funds for men’s health issues and have a bit of fun doing it.

It surprises many to learn that in virtually every country, men have shorter lifespans and poorer health. Australia is no exception. Part of Movember is highlighting what more can be done to make men healthier.

The Hawthorne Clinic team hopes their involvement in the initiative can start a few conversations and remove the stigma surrounding men’s health.
